Selkies are seal-folk who can change from seal form to human form by shedding their sealskin. In The Selkie Bride, a fisherman steals a selkies’ sealskin and forces her to become his bride. Because he keeps her sealskin hidden, she is forced to stay in her human form and never return to the sea.
With this illustration, I wanted to focus on the connection and longing between the “bride” and her seal form. I also wanted to subtly show how dominating and ominous the fisherman is.
I started this illustration with pencil on paper then drew over my drawings in Illustrator. Once I was happy with the composition, I redrew it in procreate to give it the hand-drawn texture.
